String of Bad Luck

Since this year, I had a string of bad luck. It’s amazing how I am still surviving through this.

  • My HDD crashed. I don’t have a backup. All my personal stuff is in there. The cost of recovery – RM 4K. Forget it.
  • I crashed my car at my condo at the first floor of the car park. I missed my brake and crash to the railing of the first floor. My car was hanging with the 2 front wheels at the edge of the condo. Luckily the concrete stopped my car from diving down. Cost of repair – RM 1.5K. Cost of repair to the condo – another RM 1K. Cost of live? Priceless…
  • Saman – RM 30 - RM 100. Superb. I had no choice but to park outside as the LRT parking is full. Don’t this traffic police have other better thing to do than saman those sitting ducks? It’s not that I don’t want to pay parking, there is simply NO PARKING! One hand government say take public transport but another hand there is no parking? What the heck?
  • My knee injury – this is the mother of all my bad luck. So far I have spend RM 4K on this. I am expecting to pay another RM 10-20K for the surgery. Superb! Can read more here.

It’s no doubt that I have been under tremendous stress lately due to my business. It’s been hell.

Being a new start-up, I have to juggle everything from the programming, management, finance, sales, accounts, HR, filing, banking and right up to delivery boy. My phone won’t stop ringing and my email won’t stop piling. I have no doubt this is all part and parcel of business, but working for 8 months straight without a break, took its toll on me. Surviving a near death experience was a wake up call for me.

I took a break recently to get away from all this. I left my mobile phone and laptop at home and ran to Malacca. Stayed in Holiday Inn. Nice place.

Unfortunately, it only helped a bit. One lesson I learn here is I am too dependant on technology. As a business owner, I don’t think we can escape from being part of the business. It’s like being the Borg.

Resistance is futile!

I just hope God can be a little forgiving and give me a break. Sorry God, I think I have to postpone my Umrah until I get well from my surgery.

Bali Trip

I am suppose to update on Day 2, but its has been sometime now that I have forgotten what I did. All I can remember now was that I had a bad food poisoning after Made Warung.

I remember getting up around 6 AM, my stomach was rumbling. After that the entire 2 days was gone and I spend most of my time in the loo.

On the 3rd, we transferred over to Bali Island Villa for 4D3N. I had to go to the clinic. The staff brought me to the clinic nearby and waited for me - very nice of them. The charge for some diarrhoea medicine - RM 200 ++! What a rip-off!

Below is the snippets of the entire trip:-

Day 2:-
  • Toilet
  • Massage in Samaya, was OK.
  • Seminyak Town - short lived journey
  • Toilet
  • A romantic beach side dinner. It was really nice eating by the beach and listening to the breaking of the waves. Check it out.

Day 3:-

  • I initially choose Bali Island because of the pool, however I have since regret it. Samaya was much better. Hotel reviews are at the bottom of this post.
  • Dinner Cruise - Initially it was boring, since there were large group of Korean and Chinese people. The band sang songs dedicated for them which we didn't understand a thing. There is nothing much except for the boat leaving to the sea and eating buffet.
  • There were some interesting entertainment and my wife and me got invited to do some rather "erotic" game. Ohh God...
  • Finally we meet a large Malaysian group from Celcom - Apa khabar?
  • Towards the end, there were some sexy dance, see below.

Day 4:-

  • I have recovered from my food poisoning. I ask the villa's driver to sent me to Kuta Town. Remember, although not compulsory, but I had to tip the driver each time. My total tips for this trip cost me nearly few hundred Ringgit.
  • Kuta is full of people trying to make money out of you. We did manage to walk until Kuta beach and Hard Rock cafe. Its full of people. Reminds me of Pattaya.
  • We visited Tanah Lot and another temple (can't remember the name now). Tanah Lot is full of shops and you will need to bargain up to 50-70%. Good stuff.

  • Once we return to the villa, I had a surprise waiting for my wife. A romantic candle light dinner beside the pool. Check it out! Ain't I romantic?

Day 5:-

  • An interesting day. We had our breakfast in the villa. Sadly, the breakfast is disappointing. We were too spoiled in Samaya.
  • We had our massage in Tanah Merah Spa part of Bali Island Villa. In my years of getting massage, this is the best massage I ever had. It's not the spa, but the masseur. She was really good! I could feel my entire body went into deep state of relaxation.
  • Next was Uluwatu Tour and Kechek dance. On top of the hill, there is specatcular view of the ocean.

  • I really enjoyed the Kechek / Kecak / Monkey dance. It's about a story of Rama and Sita taken from a small part of the Ramayana epic story of 50,000 lines. Audience were given the storyline ahead so we could relate the dance sequence with the story. I am big fan of history, so this excited me.

  • After the dance, we were ushered to Jimbaran Bay for some beach side seafood dinner. Yes, more dinner. Call me romantic, after all this is my honeymoon trip.
  • Due to darkness, this is the only valuable shoot that I could get.

  • After the dinner, we come back to find the bedroom was flooded. Apparently there was a leak from the toilet and it spilled over to the bedroom.
  • Soon, we had an uninvited guess. Hermit the Frog, decided to have a beach party in my leaking toilet. Gosh...

Day 6:-

  • Time to go home. Before the airport, we stopped for a 2 hour spa treatment.
  • Could not compare against Tanah Merah, but we did have a pretty good spa treatment including body scrub. Place was nice and clean.
  • Back to airport, flight was delayed - nothing surprising.
  • I just couldn't wait to come back home and have a proper shower. Somehow I feel the showers in Bali are mixed with salt water.

It was a good trip however we didn't do any water sports activity at all. Maybe the next time but definitely in a group of friends.

Bali - Day 1

I was in Bali from 12 June – 17 June. Below is my story.

  • Landed 20 minutes earlier than scheduled via AirAsia. I am surprised.
  • “Sabuk Pengaman” means seat belt. "Kartu" means card.
  • AirAsia Indonesian air stewardess are hot!
  • Came out of the airport thru a maze and saw a guy holding a card with my name on it. First time ever!
  • Drove to my villa – Samaya. This is best villa ever. I was greeted with the frangipani and the manager there knew my name. Due to some mistake, I was upgraded to Royal Courtyard. Its huge!
  • I was assigned a butler, however he went missing after the first day.

Decided to have lunch in the hotel, check out the view. Indian ocean. Waves are really big!

At night, we decided to visit the famous Ku De Ta Plaza. It turned out to be a very posh and hyped up place. After looking at the menu, there was nothing that we could eat. We called our driver from the hotel to pick us up and sent us to another place. We ended up at Made’s Warung.

Made’s Warung, I regret eating here..

After dinner, we decided to go back. Only take BlueBird taxis guys. The rest are just leaches. However, my nightmare was just about to begin. Wait for Day 2.

Back from Brunei

Image from giftrap.com, no pics from me.

I was in Brunei for a business trip. It was a one and the half day trip, so lets sum up:-
  • I stayed in Palm Garden hotel. Nice hotel and just beside it is Fitness Zone. Its equivalent to Fitness First here and its 3 storey tall. No time to try it out...
  • Brunei is not what I expected it to be. I thought as a oil-rich country, everything would be modern. Airport suxs, the surrounding area is like Kuala Terengganu. At least their highway is toll free.
  • Food is lousy but cheap. I had a small buffet for BND 8.
  • DVD is exceptionally cheap here. Only BND 2 and damn clear.
  • The most "sakit hati" part is their cars. Cars are dirt cheap here. Vios goes for BND 19,000 and a BMW 5 series is BND 60,000. They drive all kindda cars, Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Daihatsu and etc. I did see few Protons going around. Losers...
  • Imagine government officers in Brunei driving BMW Z3, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Cefiro. Anyone doing that in Msia is asking for an appointment with ACA.
  • Petrol is so cheap here that the Brunei ppl we asked didn't even know the price. Murah bah...
  • During fasting month, the government office here close at 2 PM, but most of them leave at 12.30 pm. Unbelievable.
  • Crime rate is low. People are not afraid of leaving their laptops in the car. In KL, within 5 minutes, its gone.
  • Chicks... hmm.. subjective... KL got better selections.

Nothing much in Brunei except the dome of their national mosque is made in gold!

Songkran in Thailand

What is New Year if we do not celebrate it? 2008 is to far away, so, my wife and I made a trip to Thailand. Songkran!

2nd time in Thailand but first time in Bangkok. We took the AirAsia flight to Suvarnabumi Airport, Thailand. Below are the bullet points of my entire trip:-

Airport
  • One of the most amazing airport I have ever seen. Its huge! Way bigger than KLIA.

  • The blue lights looks beautiful matching the airport exterior design.

  • Its huge!

  • Very modern and yet it blends together with the Thai culture. Alot of statues in the airport as a deco.

  • Thai immigration officers are damn rude. I seen many times how they treat tourists. They shout at them for the slightest mistake. They never smile, and you will think, this are the front liners of Thai government and they don't smile or even say Thank You.

  • Waiting for luggage is the same as KLIA. Long wait.

  • Walking from point A to B in this airport is really a task. Sometimes it feels like going thru a maze.

  • There is no standard uniform for immigration officers here, some wear uniform, others wear suit (a suit!?), normal shirt... aiya....

  • I saw a Israel airline! First time in my life. All this while I didn't know Israel had airlines, just warplanes.

Deco in the Airport

Taxi

  • We got a cab from the airport. Their standard taxis are Toyota Altis. Yup, the exact same one that is costing us RM 100K here.

  • Now, important lesson about Thai taxis. Always ask the price before you get in. Negotiate for the best price. Why? Even if you ask them to use the meter, they will use the longest route to get to your destination. Its always a lose-lose situation for us.

  • Yes, all taxi drivers in Thai are disgruntled ex-F1 drivers. So put on your crash helmet.

City

  • I was amazed with the city. Everything is huge here.

  • They have about 8 to 4 lanes highway stretching from the airport to the city and the toll is much cheaper compared to KL. Most of the roads leading into and out of the city are highways. Some are elevated highways. We went to Pattaya on an elevated highway. I think we were on the highway for about 1 hour or so. Compare to our Prolintas. You do the math.

  • BKK is very modern city compared to KL. The city is well planned, but can't say much about traffic congestion. They have digital traffic congestion signboard.

  • Bill boards are triple the size of those in KL.

  • While on the trip to Pattaya, left and rights were factories. Not just one but just factories all over until your eyes can see. Huge economy here.

  • They really have huge malls here. Sadly didn't managed to venture into one.

  • So many fitness centers here. I didn't managed to go to Fitness First here. They have FF Plus - with salt water swimming pool!

Songkran - now for the best part

  • Songkran is synonym to water festival. Basically they throw water on you and wish you Happy New Year. I guess it started with sprinkling of water as a blessing but some smart aleck decided to take it further with water guns.

  • I met with my friend and his wife (who became our host) and they took us around to celebrate Songkran. Well thinking Songkran was over, I wore my T-Shirt and Jeans. What a mistake.

  • We got onto a Tuk-Tuk (Yeah! finally), and he brought us around from our hotel. The next thing I knew, every corner there will be a group of ppl waiting with pails of water. Seriously, PAILS of WATER. They have past the water gun stage here.

  • After one round of getting splashed with water (I didn't get hit much), my friend said "Ganee, hold this water gun, hold it?". Well OK. Bad move.

  • Well, the rule of the thumb is if you hold a water gun, your gonna get it. I learn this the hard way.

  • What I saw next was, WATER, WATER and WATER. Splash! Blink open eyes, SPLASH! SPLASH! We are talking about buckets here ppl.

  • BKK was hot and didn't rain, but the roads were wet until the next day. That much water was used.

  • I was soaking wet with my socks and jeans and it was not over yet.

  • After soaking wet in Nana Road we went to Koa Sarn Road. The entire road was filled with people and each one of them looked like zombie. Apart from throwing water, they now put white powder unto your face. Escape!

  • At one corner I saw someone taking water from this filthy river and preparing it to throw. Yuck!

A scene of water splashing

Yes, they go in pickup trucks and start a water war

Shopping

  • There is this huge flea market in BKK. Its called Chatuchak. It houses hundreds of small stores selling all kindda thing from small key chain to t-shirts, shoes, fake jewellery, all kindda souvenir. I think we only finish about 20% of the area and we went around for 4 hours.

  • Earlier mentioned was the flea market that operates only in the morning. There is another flea market that operates in the night. But this one has a huge open air food court with live entertainment and a huge screen.

  • I missed going to Siam Paragon which is the biggest mall in BKK.

Pattaya beach

  • We made a day trip to Pattaya beach for some sun and sea. It was about 2 hours bus ride, but it was highway all the way.

  • We did nothing but lay around the beach, sleep and eat. In other words, being a slob.

  • I can't believe the number of beach peddler who bugs your life every 5 second. How can one enjoy the beach?

  • But the beach is too hot for comfort, on the way back, we kena baling water again. The street is not safe at all.

Pattaya Beach

Food

  • Tx to my buddy, halal food was easy to find compared to Phuket.

  • I tried an extremely hot spicy food, can't remember the name. I had to buy an ice-cream to cool down. 40 baht! Cut throat!

IMPORTANT:

Although the trip was suppose to be all fun, but I had a lot of opportunity to learn about different culture and country. I learn about people and aspiration. I learn about economy and democracy. I learn about people's passion for the King. This was a study trip for me and have open my mind to think out of the box. This trip helped my self-esteem and my outlook towards life. It was a good trip.

A shout out to my buddy for your sincere help in accommodation, paying my meals , taking us around BKK and Pattaya, shopping and host of other stuff. Thanks man!

New Year in Phuket

I celebrated my New Year in a foreign land - Phuket! This is the second country I am visiting after Singapore which was in the year 1997-1998.

Patong Beach

How was it? It was overall a good trip but could be better. Being in Phuket with a bunch of friends was an interesting event. For a person who didn't travel much, I can say the 10 most striking thing about Phuket from my point of view is :-

  1. 96% population in Phuket are whites (from all over the world). The rest are Indian, Nepal, Chinese, Thai and "lain-lain".

  2. Pork is served widely. Its like their national dish. You can get pork just about everywhere. Its tough for a Muslim to eat. Yes, there are Halal restaurant, but its like paying RM 20 for a meal.

  3. Dogs in Phuket are mute. They don't bark. Not even the Rottweiler.

  4. My trip was during the super peak season, so the prices of all items are triple than normal. But their imitation products are good!

  5. I can't get used to paying in Bath. Because everything you pay, you need to add a zero behind the number you pay in Msia. Imagine paying for a mineral water, "20 bath", "what!? 20 ringgit... ohh wait a minute... RM 2.. ok...."

  6. Thais can't pronounce Twenty (20). They will pronounced it as Seventy (70). I got a shock of my life while paying for my mineral bottle.

  7. There is mobile advertisement van promoting Muay Thai fights all day and night long. For the first day you are there, its fine.. but it sure gets on your nerve after the first day. "Big fight! Big fight! Tonight! Tonight!". Ganee goes = "F*$% idiot! Stupid irritating! Arghghh!"

  8. Beware while bargaining with Nepal girls (The salesgirls in the gift shop lah!). They may be small but feisty.

  9. Somehow Thailand is famous for suits. You can make your complete business suit here for RM 500. I got one!

  10. Everyone is your friend in Phuket. "My friend, come in my friend".

New Year!?

It was the best New Year ever! The entire Bangla Road (Strange.. didn't see any banglas) was in a party mood.

  • Firecrackers was bursting all night long. Those CNY firecrackers bursting one after another on the roads.

  • People were dancing, spraying you with some kindda party thingy. (don't know what is it).

  • Watch fireworks just above you, literally I was directly under the fireworks, it was amazing.

  • Watch ppl let go hundreds of lanterns by the beach. It was a beautiful sight.

  • Watch ppl get drunk and stone asleep by the beach. I hope the wave didn't bring him away.

  • People was amazingly nice. Even though they were drunk and partying. No fights broke out. Ppl were polite and respectful. You can't get that in KL. Not with the Mat Rempits around.

  • Ppl were dressed to kill. We came with shirt and jeans. Ok what?

Other interesting things?

  • Phuket this time around was full of perfect ppl. The guys were hunk and very muscular. The ladies were very pretty and overly "perfect" in certain part of their body anatomy. Kindda Utopia. Were we the outcast.

  • Yes, there were topless girls in the beach, sadly old ppl.

  • Yes, there were pretty "ladyboys". No I didn't approached them.

  • Sleazy joints? Its there if you look hard enough.
  • Bangla Road is the most happening place in Phuket. Its filled with rows of bars and pubs. Each outlet has its own trademark. Some provide pole dancers, both original and ladyboy.

  • The best pick up line I have heard... "Mister, can I love you for one hour?". Hahahh my friend and I laughed hysterically.
  • Take a tour to Phi Phi island. We went snorkeling at one spot. It looked like 100m deep. Although beautiful but not for the faint hearted.

Things that I missed and wished I have done:-

  • FantaSea show

  • Simon cabaret show

  • Firing range

  • Jet ski

  • Visiting Karon beach (Nude beach?)

  • Getting a bike/car and travel the entire island

  • Getting a spa treatment

  • Watching a Muay Thai fight

  • Getting on a Tuk Tuk.

  • Visiting the rest of the beaches. So sad....

  • Walking half naked like the whites guys. But alas, I don't have 6 packs.....

My advise, visit Phuket during the New Year once in your lifetime before you reach 35.

Back from Cherating

I just got back from a much needed vacation. This time around, the destination is Cherating. This is my second time to Cherating and to the same hotel - Impiana Cherating. This hotel with its rustic and ala Malay traditional architecture capture my attention and mesmerized me on my first visit. But what really made me return is the placement of the rooms close to the sea, where you can hear the sounds of the thundering yet soothing waves from your room.

This is where I laid back and enjoyed the breeze and sounds of the waves.

The main purpose of this journey was not to enjoy or to take a break, but rather to have a quite environment for me to reexamine my purpose in life. I have achieve half of the objectives I set out to do here. The rest, time will tell.

The beach... regret not spending more time here...

In Cherating or Kuantan, life moves in a much slower pace. I felt I was moving much faster than time and the cruel reason is because I have been obsessed and influenced with KL's ruthless lifestyle.

Here, you are able to relax and wind down. I could really feel the difference. People are nicer and life is much more simpler. There is nothing to rush for or to compete with.

The moment I got onto Karak-KL highway, I saw the ugly side of these Ws plat numbers. Sigh... I wish I could stay longer.

I bid farewell to the sea... liken to the ebb and tide, my life is such.

I hope a day will come when I can rejoice my success in life with a dwelling near the sea. Put away the hatreds and disappointments and embrace life the way it should. We all can learn a thing or two from nature.

This entry was published using Windows Live Writer. Pretty cool software. Sadly blogger.com does not support image publishing.

Company Trip

I just got back from my company trip held at Summerset, Rompin. This place is really ulu, where ther is no line and surrounded by jungle.

The trip was fun and nice, but consist alot of team building activities. The worst activitiy was to dig out sand from the beach to built a small tunnel, using your bare hands. On that day, I felt how a dog will feel like...

Most of the free time I get which is between lunch hour and evenings, I dive straight into the pool. Yup, good old cardio exercise. The funny things is I didn't see the gym here eventhough its listed on their brochure.

Pool is clean and nice, and we did spent quite abit of time playing water polo.

The sea was quite rough with big waves. The night was fantastic whereby the sky was brightly lit with stars.

Among the activities we played was water polo, volley ball and beach soccer. Unfortunately, my wrist got worse and now this is my 3rd week that I am out of the gym. I hope to get well soon, can't wait to get back to gym.

Raya in Penang

This is my second time celabrating Raya up north in Penang. Penang is the usual boring, jam packed and choke with tourists. Raya this year must be one of my most boring Raya, I am been kept mostly in my room reading up the "Da Vince Code", sleeping or dreaming. Luckily some of my friends are around. I am able to access internet here, thanks for to my neighbour "free" wireless service.

I went around taking alot of photos in Penang. Here is some....

Finally in Penang...

Trip to Tioman

OK... here is my trip journal........ My trip to Tioman Island, Pahang, Malaysia.
All the photos haven't been sent to develop yet.. will keep you guys informed on the pixs.

The night before Day 1:
My ATM card got stuck! Duhh! Is this a sign of bad luck?

Day 1 (The beginning):
Left home at 6.30 AM. Headed down to Sg. Besi highway. The journey was fast. Stopped at Ayer Keroh Restoran Jejantas, I didn't know they had this here. Thanks to a fellow in autoword.com.my, he provided me a detail map in getting to Mershing.

I turn off Ayer Itam exit. The roads were ok, but its a 2 lane winding road. After passing all the town, turned into a road heading to Mershing. Its like 100 KM! What! The road was horrible, which moron suggested me to drive? The whole 100 KM journey was bad. It was a only 2 lane road with only plantation on the sides of the road. If I were to die here, not one would notice it. I was already regretting in not taking the flight now. I speed all the way till finally I reached civilization. It was Mershing town.

The official parking place was full! I had to park at someone's house. RM 5 per day. Next, I had to pay a stupid tax RM 10. Next, getting a boat. I was there about 12.30PM, the next one is at 1.30 PM. Because of the low tide, the speedboat only managed to leave about 2.30-2.45 PM. The first hour was horrible, the boat had to move like negative 5 KM per hour because of the low tide. Passenger was asked to stand till the front of the boat to balance up the boat! After an hour standing, we managed to enter deep water. Then the speedboat was really speeding (we were jumping up and down against the wave, that was fun!)

Managed to reach Berjaya at 5.00 PM. Finally! Checked in, the ppl was very nice! Room was ok only, not as in the pic below! Took a bath, then had a rest. Night, we went and had an expensive yet not tasty dinner in the hotel. Later just hanged around and slept.. too exhausted from the journey.

Day 2 (The middle):
We met this family couple in the Jetty. They suggest we go to the marine park in the morning. So we did follow them to the marine park. Before that we saw those lazy monitor lizards at the park within the hotel. Boy, the marine water was quite clear. We saw alot of fishes. We bought some bread crumbs and just threw the bread to the sea area. Man, this fishes are all well fed. Alot colourful ones. All of them were fighting for the food. Since we didn't know how to swim, we didn't try to swim with the fishes. Went down the the beach and just hang around. Had lunch and headed back. In the evening we went around the beach and later hang around in the wading pool. Later at night, we went of for dinner, yuck food! Come back and eat again.

Day 3(Almost the end)
The most fun day! We went snorkeling! The first island, we were taught how to breath with the mask and swim around. The problem is we both don't know how to swim, the more we tried to swim the more we were not getting anywhere! It was funny. The poor boatman had to swim along with us in order for us to see the coral. Its was a nice experience.

The next stop was rather deep. A bit of hesitance to get down. Once we got comfortable with its was a nice view. Huge corals! Fishes was practically swimming beside us.

Third stop was lunch time, food was nice and cheap.4th stop was Marine park. This time close up with those fishes again. 5th stop was Renggis Island. We started to get a hang of it, swim across saw alot of corals and fishes. There was one incident I can't forget which was the was a fish that actually swim across me and turned around and look at me. I was startled and I started laughing. That was funny!

Then finally back to the hotel. I wished I could swim. You really need to know how to swim in order to enjoy snorkeling. Soon I hope. Next time I hope to go diving.

Back to the room. Now our body was aching from the swim. Its no joke. Its really painful this today. At night, we went to a restaurant recommended by the boatman. Man he was right, it was nice and clean place. We had a huge fish... boy I was full till the night!

Day 4 (The end)
We changed our return boat time from 12 to 9.30. We waited and waited and waited. But first boat refuse to take us and the second one didn't even stop. Finally got a boat on the 12.30 PM. There was this American couple waited the same time as us but didn't get on the boat. They didn't had tickets, someone pass them wrong information. I wonder how are they now? Reached jetty at 2 PM. The homeowner was waiting for me. Good! Got in my car and head back home. Reached home at 7 PM.

Overall this was a very exciting, non-stop activity vacation for me. The main purpose was to relax here, but ended up doing alot things. I am quite happy with this vacation compare to the rest. Head to tioman! But please take a flight!
I just got back from Tioman... I am too tired to write anything. Will publish all of the info later. Right now, the only thing I can say is I look like a negro.
